The Thapar Group has been closely associated with the production and distribution of coal since its inception in 1929. Pre-nationalisation, the various Group companies, such as United Collieries Ltd., Oriental Coal Company Ltd., Bhora Kankanee Ltd., Tentulia Khas Company Ltd. etc., owned several coal mines across India, and were collectively considered the second largest producers of coal in the country. After nationalisation of the coal mines in the early 1970s, the Company reoriented its efforts on coal distribution and logistics and reinforced its existing nationwide infrastructure to provide a wide range of consumer-oriented, coal-related services.
Today, it is one of the largest coal handling companies in India. It deals with all major consumers of the fuel, both public and private sectors, and is responsible for the entire set of logistical operations involved in the movement of coal through all rail and rail-cum-sea routes and road routes.
